World Class Prayer Meeting

Revival will not be birthed in its fullness until we give attention to this vital key. It is important to the heart of God and to our hearts to be so concerned about souls that we are consumed with the desire to see lives changed.

WASHINGTON, DC -- While in Europe in June we were privileged to attend a City-wide prayer meeting in Berlin, Germany, with approximately a hundred pastors, missionaries, and wives . The guest speaker was Bishop Klemens, the current leader of the Moravian movement. He gave a short history of the church and its founder, Nikolas Count Ludwig Von Zinzendorf. The thing that impressed me the most was the > community called Herrnhut (The Lord's Watch) started in 1727 almost failed because of division and arguments. Zinzendorf was greatly persecuted and considered radical to say the least as many visionaries are.

Repentance and forgiveness became the necessary watchwords and a prayer meeting was begun to sustain the movement. This prayer meeting continued for one hundred years, twenty four > hours a day. Both adults and children wept and prayed with power before God. In 1732 the Moravians sent our their first missionaries. An Angelican missionary, John Wesley from England, was among their first converts. Thirty two years old, Wesley was on a ship aimed for America when he encountered the Moravians who were also headed for America to evangelize.

After landing the young Wesley asked August Spangenberg, a Moravian pastor, about an incident that happened during the voyage. A storm had struck, covered the deck and split the main sail. The English were screaming while the Germans remained calm. Wesley wanted to know the reason for their calmness. Mr. Spangenberg simply asked the Angelican missionary, "Do you know Jesus Christ?" Wesley finally faced the question and realized his need for such a Savior. The rest is history.

As we reflected on the leader's comments at the Berlin meeting, we remembered that the emphasis in America and around the world now seems to be on prayer, particularly twenty four hour prayer. Many churches and prayer groups are seeing the need and following the lead to establish such times. We must follow the Lord's example and come apart to pray as he often did.

> We must also follow the example of repentance and unity in our groups. The need for unity is important in any number of prayers. Even man and wife are urged not to let the sun go down on their wrath. We must live in a state of forgiveness if our prayers are to be effective.

Let's be challenged and receive fresh inspiration by the early movement of the Moravian church led by Zinzendorf and rededicate ourselves to the business of prayer and even twenty-four hour prayer. Revival will not be birthed in its fullness until we give attention to this vital key. It is important to the heart of God and to our hearts to be so concerned about souls that we are consumed with the desire to see lives changed.
